The following Wednesday, again at Champion Hill, we won an absorbing game with LEATHERHEAD by the only goal. Still smarting from their 5-1 defeat at our hands in the League Cup semi-final the previous week, the Tanners were anxious for revenge. In all fairness they played much better this time and deserved something out of the game, but our lads dug in and defended really well. Ray Powell wasted an early chance after some neat approach play, but it was Leatherhead who looked the more threatening and only a brave block by Francis Duku denied Mu Maan a goal. Eventually, in the 37th minute, Leatherhead gained a penalty for handball, but James Dunn guessed correctly and dived to his left to parry Greg Andrews' spot-kick. Five minutes later, and against the run of play, we took the lead. A left-wing corner from Junior Kadi was nodded down by Francis Duku and, from 15 yards, Vernon Francis struck a firm shot which took a wicked deflection off a defender, hit the underside of the bar and bounced down over the line. Shortly afterwards Kevin James almost made it two with a fine effort which beat the 'keeper but narrowly missed the target. The Tanners renewed their efforts after the break but our defence stood firm, particularly during a tense last quarter of an hour. Visiting 'keeper Chico Ramos made a good save from Ray Powell following a corner, but that was the only clear chance we created in this period. Most of the action came at our end where Maan missed badly, shooting wide with only our 'keeper to beat, Chris Boulter had a header cleared off the line, then in the dying seconds of added time Tommy Hutchings left James Dunn standing with a fierce free-kick from 25 yards which clipped the outside of the post.
