On Tuesday evening, we gave an excellent performance at LEATHERHEAD in the semi-final of the Championship Manager Cup and ran out convincing 5-1 winners. After playing in the League Cup competition for some thirty-five years, this is the first time we have ever reached the final, so our congratulations go to Gavin and the lads. The Tanners won the Championship Manager Cup last season and are well up with the league leaders this term, so even the most optimistic Hamlet fan could not have foreseen the outcome of Tuesday's encounter. However, right from the off our team played with steely determination and no little skill and our finishing was first class. We opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Ray Powell shrugged off his marker on the right and crossed from the line to the back post where the incoming Kevin James finished with great aplomb. The home side are well renowned for their counter-attacking abilities and we had a narrow escape shortly afterwards when Tommy Hutchings volleyed wide after a defensive mix-up. We continued to attack at every opportunity though and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Kevin James was clearly held back by a defender on the edge of the six-yard box. Later Junior Kadi went close with a low drive and Ray Powell was denied by Tanners 'keeper Chico Ramos. The home side retaliated and equalised on the half-hour when Mu Maan fired in from eight yards off the underside of the bar after a break from Hutchings down the right. However, we regained the lead just three minutes later when Nyren Clunis shot in off the 'keeper from 12 yards following a free-kick. Five minutes before half time, we went 3-1 up. Kalvin Morath-Gibbs burst through on the right and his cross was clinically converted by Ray Powell with a well-directed header. Leatherhead doubled their efforts to get back into the game after the interval, but their shooting was well off-target, except for a 59th minute effort from Greg Andrews which clipped the top of our crossbar. At the other end, we continued to look dangerous and in the 68th minute, after substitute Ellis Wilson-Joseph was brought down just outside the box, Kevin James stepped up to produce a sublime free-kick which curled round the wall and into the top corner of the net. Nyren Clunis missed a good chance shortly afterwards, but he made amends in the 74th minute by supplying the cross from which Kalvin Morath-Gibbs fired home left-footed from 15 yards for goal number five. There was no way back for the cup holders after that, although Hutchings nearly reduced the arrears with a rising drive that drew a fine save from James Dunn. Kevin James went close to completing a hat trick just before the end with a snap shot from 20 yards, but Ramos was alert to the situation and turned the ball behind at his near post.
