Our last home game, against EASTBOURNE TOWN the Tuesday before last, resulted in a 2-2 draw. It was a match we should have wrapped up by half time, but in the end we were grateful for a point. In the first half, we quickly got on top and almost scored in the fifth minute when a hook shot from Rob Gradwell beat the 'keeper, but it struck the inside of the far post and bounced back into play. Rob was not to be denied, however, and just six minutes later, he converted a short cross from Nyren Clunis to give us the lead. We went on to dominate the rest of the half, but failed to add to our score. Nyren Clunis had one decent shot deflected wide off a defender, and later blazed a clear chance over the bar. We also missed a 39th minute penalty. Gerry Gonnella took the spot-kick after he himself had been brought down, but Eastbourne's former Hamlet 'keeper Kieron Thorp pulled off a brilliant save, diving full-length to his right to turn the ball behind. Little was seen of the Sussex side's attack in this period, their only threat was a long-range free kick from Matt Ferdinando that produced a diving save from James Dunn. After the interval, Eastbourne came more into the game as our play became increasingly ragged. Nevertheless, we had a great opportunity to sew up the points in the 74th minute, when Nyren Clunis fastened onto a through ball and sidestepped the advancing Thorp, but with the goal at his mercy he shot against the inside of the post and once again the ball rebounded into play. Eastbourne took full advantage of this reprieve and equalised ten minutes from time. A corner was only half cleared to the edge of the box from where Brett Patton struck a fierce first time shot into the corner of the net. Worse was to follow. In the 84th minute, our 'keeper made a good block from Brad Manton but the ball was quickly returned into the middle for the same player to make no mistake second time around and put the Sussex side 2-1 ahead. The late drama continued to the very end. Three minutes from time, we equalised when Justin Bowen touched in a free kick from Gerry Gonnella. Then, in stoppage trine, James Dunn saved brilliantly at point blank range to deny Sam Crabb a winner.
