Last Saturday, at MERSTHAM, we recovered from two goals down to win 3-2. This was our sixth successive away victory, equalling a run enjoyed in 1985/86, which is our best since winning eight away games in a row way back in season 1949/50. Well done, lads! Conditions at Merstham were very testing, with the pitch quite muddy and a gale-force wind blowing. Despite playing against the wind in the first-half, we enjoyed the balance of play and created most of the scoring chances. Quade Taylor shot straight at 'keeper Dave Tidy when set up by Rob Gradwell, who hit the post in the ninth minute with a lob over Tidy. The home side retaliated briefly and James Dunn did well to tip over a dipping free-kick from Dale Marvell. Later in the half, we suffered a double blow. Lewis Gonsalves was forced off with a knee injury, one which is likely to keep him out for a few weeks, and straight from the restart Merstham took the lead. Our defence was sliced open by Tiago Andrade's through ball and Ross White ran through to beat the advancing James Dunn. We had chances to equalise, but Nyren Clunis was thwarted by the 'keeper and Justin Bowen failed to convert an inviting free-kick from Junior Kadi. Nine minutes into the second-half, Merstham doubled their advantage when Andrade, at the back post, volleyed in a left-wing cross from Marvell. With the wind now at our backs, we were styli doing most of the attacking and seven minutes later we finally got on the score sheet. Ray Powell exchanged passes with Rob Gradwell and shot wide of Tidy from ten yards to reduce the arrears. Following the best move of the match, Rob Gradwell went close with a hooked shot which narrowly missed the angle of post and bar, but he was not to be denied and in the 70th minute he fired home from a narrow angle following a corner from Junior Kadi to make it 2-2. As the minutes ticked away, Nyren Clunis shot wide when well placed, and at the other end David Smith fluffed a rare chance for the home side. We always looked the likelier winners, but it was not until the fourth minute of stoppage time before we grabbed the deciding goal. Substitute Omarr Lawson passed inside from the right and Nyren Clunis hit the sweetest of first-time shots past Tidy and inside the far post.
