WALTON & HERSHAM were last week's visitors to Champion Hill. After a run of four defeats, Gavin and the team were determined to return to winning ways last Saturday and they did not disappoint, recording a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Oddly, the match started with only two officials (this is permitted within League rules, however) end almost ten minutes had passed before the missing assistant arrived to take up his position. Shortly after his arrival, we should have taken the lead but Jason Pinnock failed to get on top of his header at the back post from Kevin James' inswinging comer and the ball flew over the bar. It was not much longer though before we opened the scoring. Fullback Dean Carpenter accepted a return pass out on the left, near the corner-flag, and cut Inside, past a bemused defender, before crossing low beyond the 'keeper towards the far post where the onrushing Nyren Clunis netted without difficulty. We continued to press for the remainder of the half. Visiting 'keeper Dean Ruddy made a timely save to tip over a dipping header from Kevin James and later Nyren Clunis should have scored again; released by Kalvin Morath-Gibbs, the young winger turned his marker Inside out as he advanced on goal but, with only Ruddy to beat some ten yards out, he drove wildly over the bar.

Little was seen of Walton & Hersham as an attacking force in this period and when they did gain a free kick in a promising position just outside the box shortly before half time; Avun Jephcott's shot sailed over the bar. The half ended with Nyren Clunis once more tormenting the visitors' defence, a fine run down the right culminating In Ruddy blocking the young winger's shot.

Our opponents came more into the game after the Interval, but never seriously threatened and our defence stood firm. In the 65th minute we broke away to score a second goal and after that the outcome was never in doubt. Gerry Gonnella, a half-time substitute for the Injured Junior Kadi, put Nyren Clunis away on the right and his cross into the goalmouth was tucked away by Sol Pinnock.

Ruddy made another fine save, denying Nyren Clunis after a neat cut-back from Sol Pinnock, and then our own 'keeper James Dunn was tested for the first and only time, stretching to tip over a header from Troy Oham-Strachan. The action finished with us once again in the ascendancy. Nyren Clunis who, on another day could have easily had a hat trick, was only a whisker away from the far post with a low shot, before Ruddy blocked well from Kevin James.
