The Saturday before Christmas, we suffered a surprise 0-1 defeat away to Ashford Town. Phil Williams returned to the side in the place of Omari Coleman, otherwise we were unchanged. Ashford played with a spirit and determination that belied their lowly league position and deserved their victory. They certainly enjoyed the better of the first-half exchanges, with Walid Matata and George Fenwick both fluffing early chances after alarming cracks had appeared in our defence. They eventually took the lead in the 22nd minute with what proved to be the decisive goal. An inswinging corner from Kenny Jarrett-Elliott saw Fenwick get in front of 'keeper Simon Overland to head home. Later only a last-ditch tackle by Lewis Tozer denied Jarrett-Elliott when once again our defence was breached. Our first-half performance was probably as bad as wee have played all season and it was only in the closing stages of the half that we came to life. Shawn Beveney went close with a fierce angled a shot, then in the 41st minute Phil Williams blazed wildly over the bar after a shot from David Moore had been blocked. Seconds before the interval, at the other end, Justyn Roberts cleared off the line after a free kick from Jarrett-Elliott had slipped through our 'keeper's fingers.

The second half opened with a spell of Ashford pressure which only came to an end when Simon Overland made a fine save from Matata, We then began to have more of the play but seldom threatened, except when a low cross from Chris Dickson flashed across the goalmouth with David Moore just out of reach. Ashford continued to look dangerous, on the rare occasions they mustered a breakaway, and twice Matata went close. Towards the end we renewed our efforts to snatch an equaliser but the nearest we came was in stoppage time when from Kenny Beaney's leftwing cross a header from Gavin Dayes flew past the far upright.
